ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the knowledge level and learning capacity regarding keratoconus in a population taken care of at a tertiary reference hospital. METHODS: A questionnaire was randomly assigned to keratoconus patients during their ocular evaluation for keratoplasty. Subsequently informative data about the disease were given to these patients. The same questionnaire was assigned again after the patients read the informative material. The results were compared statistically by Student's t test. RESULTS: Thirty-one individuals answered both questionnaires. The average of correct answers before the study of the informative material was 4.45 questions (49.46%) with a standard deviation (SD) of ±1.02. After the informative data, the level of correct answers increased to 7.19 questions (79.9%) and SD of ±0.65. The difference was statistically significant with p<0.0001. CONCLUSION: The knowledge on keratoconus of the studied population is low, specially on aspects that range from prognosis to evolution and treatment. However, this lack of information may be changed adopting appropriate measures.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o nível de conhecimento e aprendizado sobre ceratocone, em uma população portadora desta doença, atendida em hospital de referência terciário. MÉTODOS: Um questionário foi distribuído aleatoriamente a pacientes portadores de ceratocone, durante uma consulta para avaliação quanto à indicação de ceratoplastia. Posteriormente foi distribuído material informativo sobre a doença, para que fosse estudado. Após a leitura o mesmo questionário foi novamente aplicado. Os resultados foram comparados estatisticamente pelo teste t de Student. RESULTADOS: Trinta e um indivíduos responderam aos dois questionários. A média de acertos antes da leitura do material informativo foi de 4,45 questões (49,46%) com desvio padrão (DP) de ±1,02 acerto. Após a leitura o índice de acertos no mesmo questionário subiu para 7,19 questões (79,9%) e DP ±0,65 acerto. A diferença foi estatisticamente significante com p<0,0001. CONCLUSÃO: O nível de conhecimentos da população estudada a respeito de sua doença é baixo, especialmente nos aspectos que abrangem prognóstico, evolução e tratamento da doença. Contudo, este quadro de desinformação pode ser mudado com a adoção de medidas apropriadas.
